Pewter Sky was born when Phil Atkin discovered the magic of modern pewter. Since he was young, Phil has been fascinated by molten metal but he never imagined that he would become a pewter craftsman. For many years he expressed his creativity through the medium of computer graphics. But his love of nature inspired him to find a means of creating art that was both beautiful and useful, and in a happy coincidence, he found his muse in a workshop offered by one of the UK's leading pewtersmiths.
Since then Phil has been casting pewter homewares using time-honoured craft techniques. The work is labour-intensive -- each piece is created by hand pouring molten pewter into an individual rubber mould. The resulting cast is then hand finished.
Phil finds his inspiration in the beautiful and diverse Cornish coast. He spends many hours walking the beaches, watching the waves as they draw back along the sand, leaving behind treasures in the form of pebbles and shells. His work reflects the natural elements of the Cornish coastline: smooth sandy bays, rugged slate outcroppings, pounding surf and quiet tide pools. Phil creates the moulds for his hand-cast pieces from carefully selected shells he has discovered on his beachcombing expeditions. He also casts occasional pieces from exotic shells given to him by friends who know of his passion for pewter.
Phil's work has been shortlisted for the National Trust and Craft Council 2017 Open Call. Pewter Sky is also featured in Cornish Style, a catalogue of selected Cornish artists and artisans being promoted to an international market.
